AbbVie announced a recent 340B policy change requiring Grantee 340B Covered Entities to utilize 340B ESP, adding another manufacturer restriction to accessing 340B drug discounts.

AbbVie announced a recent 340B drug discount policy change requiring Grantee 340B Covered Entities to utilize 340B ESP, adding another manufacturer restriction to accessing 340B drug discounts.

What do I need to know?

  • Starting January 1, 2025, Grantee covered entity types will be required to use the web-based platform, 340B ESP to submit requested claims data.

“This change is the newest development to a wide range of changes in ESP and manufacturer restrictions. Previously limited to just larger hospital-type entities, smaller grantees are now being targeted with the burden of these restrictions at an alarming rate.”

  • This is very short-notice for implementing the ESP program, especially for grantee covered entities that have not used ESP in the past.
  • Grantee covered entities that elect not to register or provide the required claims data for a contract pharmacy will no longer be able to order AbbVie medications at 340B discounted pricing.
  • AbbVie is allowing Grantees to continue using an unlimited number of Contract Pharmacies, but the pharmacies must be designated as such in the Covered Entities’ 340B ESP portal.

“With this new restriction and time constraint, the process to designate a pharmacy is often dependent on whether the CE has a Healthcare Industry Number (HIN).  If the Covered Entity does not already have an HIN, the necessary pharmacy designation process is delayed and often results in a loss of savings”

  • There are no changes to Abbvie’s existing 340B policies for Hospital entity types.

“On the positive side, many covered entities have already operationalized these changes in previous years. Of note, Abbvie is the maker of some heavy hitter drugs such as Mavyret, Norvir, Skyrizi, Venclexta, and Zinbryta, all of which can have a large financial impactful on CEs”

How to Prepare

  • Grantee Covered Entities need to BE PROACTIVE to ensure unfettered access to AbbVie’s 340B Drug Pricing.
  • Ensure you are registered with 340B ESP.
  • Determine if all Contract Pharmacies have an HIN and complete the HIN assignment process if needed.
  • Designate all Contract Pharmacies for AbbVie within the 340B ESP portal.
  • Make sure you have trained staff that are prepared to upload prescription claims
  • Once complete, regularly check the ESP portal to ensure maintained access to 340B pricing
